From: Deborah Jepsen, Educational & Developmental Psychologist.

Dear Student Counsellor,

Have you ever searched for practical counselling resources to help you…

  • Structure and guide your student counselling sessions?
  • Counsel more effectively and in a more focused way?
  • Achieve better outcomes in a shorter time?

… Or have you ever simply wondered if such resources existed?

If you’re at all like me you probably answered “yes” to each of the above questions.

In a moment I’m going to tell you exactly what I did about it and how YOU can enjoy the same benefits in your own day-to-day student counselling.

But first, let me introduce myself…

My name is Deborah Jepsen. I’m an Educational and Developmental Psychologist and the principal psychologist at School Psychology Services in Port Melbourne.

I’ve worked as a School Counsellor (and as a teacher) and I know it’s not easy to juggle the competing demands and interests of students, staff and parents.

It can be very demanding and, frankly, you need all the help you can get!

Sure, you can scrape together a few ad-hoc counselling activities from various websites or books, and that’s better than nothing…

But wouldn’t you rather have access to quality resources that address nearly ALL of the most common student issues in a friendly, easy-to-use and practical way?

Resources that are safely grounded in tried and trusted clinical counselling frameworks like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Positive Psychology and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy?

Resources produced BY experienced child psychologists specifically FOR school counsellors?

Well, until recently such resources simply did not exist.

  1. Lower Primary

  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Behaviour Problems
  • Bullying
  • Creating Balance
  • Depression and Grief
  • Friendships

How do I find and use the resources in the library?

Simply login to the Welfare Guardian website, browse the library and download the resources you need. Most resources are standard PDF files that you can print out and use in your counselling sessions or handout to children, parents or teachers

What types of resources are in the library?

Most of the current 320+ resources are practical counselling worksheets. We are also busy developing a broad range of new resources including handouts for teachers and parents, simple flow charts and action plans.

Here’s how the worksheets will help you with everyday student welfare issues:

  • Easily focus on the most relevant issues to quickly achieve positive outcomes
  • Guide students towards finding solutions, rather than getting stuck on problems
  • Counsel more effectively and efficiently
  • Gain peace of mind knowing that you are using ‘best practice’ approaches

…all of which means you’ll see fewer tears and more cheers!

Frequently Asked Questions

[toggle title=”What is the ‘Resource Library’?”]

The Welfare Guardian resource library gives you instant digital access to over 320 practical, solution-focused student welfare resources including:

  • Counselling worksheets (these currently make up most of the library)
  • Tip sheets
  • Flowcharts
  • And more!

Resources are PDF files which you can quickly and easily access and print out on-demand for use with your clients.

Whenever a resource is updated the new file will replace the old version in the library. So now you will always have access to the latest and most up-to-date version of each resource!

We are constantly adding more resources to the library… And every time we add resources to the library you will be notified so you can instantly access and use them.

[/toggle] [toggle title=”What types of resources are in the library?”]

Most of the current 320+ resources are practical counselling worksheets. These include updated versions of Deborah’s original set of 100 worksheets as well as many new ones.

We are always busy developing a broader range of new resources to add to the library. These include tip sheets, handouts for teachers and parents and some simple flow charts to help you navigate some common welfare challenges.

[/toggle] [toggle title=”Will I receive hard copies of the resources?”]

The service is a digital file download library for the following reasons:

  1. It would be unfeasible to print and mail 900+ pages of resources and continually mail fresh copies whenever they are updated or new ones are added to the library (we add new resources each month from Feb through Nov).
  2. The point of the library is to quickly and easily find the right resource for the problem/case at hand. It’s very easy to browse through and click on a resource and simply hit print.
  3. Whenever you access a resource you are assured of always using the latest and most up-to-date version of that resource.
[/toggle] [toggle title=”What issues do the resources address?”]

All resources are neatly arranged under categories and topics so you can quickly and easily find the right resource for the issue at hand.

There are currently two main categories:

  1. Counselling
  2. Teaching and Learning

Counselling topics include:

  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Behaviour Problems
  • Bullying
  • Creating Balance
  • Depression and Grief
  • Friendships
  • Making Changes
  • Positive Psychology
  • Problem Solving
  • Regulating Emotions
  • Relaxation and Mindfulness
  • Self-Harm
  • Sleep
  • Understanding Self

Teaching and Learning topics include:

  • Goal Setting
  • Learning Disorders
  • Learning Disorder – Reading / Dyslexia
  • Learning Styles
  • Motivation
  • Study Skills
  • Thinking Skills
  • Understanding Working Memory

We also plan to add some Career Pathways resources.

If you have any other suggestions for areas you would like us to address please let me know!

[/toggle] [toggle title=”What age groups are the resources suited for?”]

Each worksheet is suitable for one of these four age groups:

  • Lower Primary
  • Upper Primary
  • Secondary
  • All Levels
[/toggle] [toggle title=”How do I find and use the resources in the library?”]

Once you are a registered member you will simply need to login to this website, browse the library section and click on the links to the resources to view or download them as PDF files which you can print out.

It’s very quick and easy to browse, find the topic or issue you are interested in and then click on any of the links to the resource files.

[/toggle] [toggle title=”If I don’t renew my membership after 12 months will I be allowed to continue using the resources I have already downloaded?”]

Yes, absolutely! Once you have downloaded a resource it is yours to use for as long as you wish (as long as you don’t share it with anyone other than the students, staff or parents you are directly helping).

That said, we will keep adding new practical and useful resources and updating the old ones based on your feedback so we hope that you will get so much value from the service that you won’t want to let your membership lapse! 🙂

[/toggle] [toggle title=”What if I have trouble accessing the website or the files because of my school’s/department’s filtering? (Especially if I work in Queensland!)”]

My technical team is doing their best to set things up in such a way that we avoid this. If it does occur I will have my technical support team get in touch with you or your school’s or department’s IT staff to try to resolve it.

In the unlikely case that we are unable to resolve it you will be issued with a refund of the unused portion of your membership fee.

[/toggle] [toggle title=”What is ‘Monthly PD Training’?”]

You will also receive 10 focused online PD sessions (webinars) delivered monthly from February to November. This online training addresses key issues that are highly relevant to student welfare professionals and introduces some of the appropriate tools and resources in the library that are helpful for each particular issue.

Sessions are also recorded and available to view online at your convenience.

[/toggle] [toggle title=”How is the PD Training delivered?”]

Each session is recorded and published on the site as a standard web video and you’ll be able to watch the recordings whenever it suits you (just like watching a YouTube video).

And you will also have access to the entire archive of training sessions as we record them.

[/toggle] [toggle title=”Will I be able to claim PD points as a member of the Australian Counselling Association?”]

We are only directly familiar with AHPRA/PBA requirements. If you are an ACA member please contact the ACA to check their requirements. However, our understanding is that you should be able to claim single points for any of our PD Training sessions that are focused primarily on counselling issues. At this stage we do not intend to register with the ACA as an accredited training provider. The ACA requires that any accredited PDs are focused primarily on counselling, whereas our PDs cover many other professional, psychological and educational issues (such as learning disorders) as well. If ACA endorsement of PDs is important to you please let us know and we will consider reviewing this in future if there is enough demand.

[/toggle] [toggle title=”What is ‘1-to-1 Coaching/Supervision’?”]

As a member of our community you will have priority access to individual coaching, consulting or supervision sessions. (Sessions may be purchased at any time.)

  • Speak with an experienced child psychologist qualified in either Educational & Developmental Psychology or Clinical Psychology
  • Sessions are delivered via skype, telephone or in-person at our practice (if you are local)
  • For when you need that “extra bit of help”
  • Discuss difficult cases in depth
  • Get independent and impartial advice
  • Gain new insights into your practice
  • Earn ‘peer consultation’ CPD points
